My Dear Sir,

I set out to recall your recollection of a case which came up about three years ago,

when I was Acting Chief Magistrate in Shanghai.

So far as my memory serves me, the following are the facts:

A charge was made against a Chinaman, who was my cook. A butler with my family deposed that during the previous night he heard a noise of many voices in the large servants' room of the premises. On proceeding quietly to the scene, he saw a large table and a number of Chinamen gambling thereat - some of them belonging to my establishment, and others not.

On the arrest and committal of the accused, we acknowledged a croupier.

You at once expressed your regret that the charge had not been laid before. I was surprised when you asked me of my connection with the Ste... Green Club, Dublin.
